Malgudi Days is a collection of thirty-two short stories written by R.K. Narayan. It is originally published in 1943 by Indian Thought Publications and later published in 1982. The stories in Malgudi Days set against the backdrop of nineteenth century India. They depict the middle-class society in a comic ironic mode. The master story-teller creates a mythical city in South India so that he has the liberty to meddle with its geography. The inhabitants of Malgudi are talkative, easy-going, intellectual and have a strong sense of identity. Narayan portrays an astrologer, a postman, a snake-charmer, a vendor of spices and chapattis- all kinds of people drawn in full colours and domestic details of a real Indian society. The themes of Narayan’s stories are about human beings. They are all dependently inter-related and inter-connected.
